Home- getting there
Wednesday, February 6, 2013 9:23 PM

So, I was going to add a few updates on our house. We are still getting settled. I finished painting the trim and walls in the kitchen, dining room, and living room. When I say that I had to paint trim, that doesn't sound serious enough. Our windows have a lot of trim around them. The blinds are inside the window, so you can see the wood trim inside where the blinds are, so they had to come out and I had to paint around those too. There are 2 sliding glass doors that were wood. I debated over painting them, they're Pella and very nice, but it would have looked weird to leave them brown when the rest of the trim was white. And there is a set of windows that start at maybe 10 feet up. So, the trim was labor intensive to say the least. I ran out of primer on the mantle and it's still nopt painted. The fireplace is something we are still mulling over. It's rock and very "heavy". It's dark and, well, heavy looking. For now, it's not one of the priority things that we're working on.

The walls are gray. It doesn't look like a major difference, but we went from cream to gray (revere pewter).

Here is a picture of the sliding doors before and with 1 coat of primer. You can see in the photo above how they look now.

The sunroom is still almost the same. All of the glue is finally off of the floor and I've hung a few yards of fabric to filter the sun a little.

This is the wall that you see when you walk in the front door. I decided to paint it with chalkboard paint. I'd like to write things on it, little happy things that make me smile, but I like my mirror on the chalky looking color too. (The mirror was an antique that I bought and painted).

Here are some of my random happy things that I've spread around. I really don't feel like our furniture is where it will be permanently, so I move stuff around constantly. It painted the globe today- I have a ton of globes. I brought a lot of them home because I have plenty of height above my kitchen cabinets to put some up there, so I'm trying that. But, I posted a picture on Facebook one day of my globes in the studio, trying to figure out how to display them and a friend (Christina Smith!:) text me a picture of some globes that had been painted with chalkboard paint and I loved them! So, I picked up one at the antique store that I didn't feel attached to the color of, just to paint! I love it, it probably won't be the last one that I paint this way. I may do a few with painted bases too.... :)

I'm still not showing the kitchen! The cabinets still aren't painted and the granite still isn't in, so it's still in the "before" stage! The JOY sign is from the kitchen looking toward the living room fireplace. AND!! The awesome pillow was a gift from my friend and fellow photographer, Jennifer Cox. It has the coordinates of our old hose on it. It is the coolest and most thoughtful gift.

I found this peeling sign at a store the other day. It says- Light Fades, Stars Appear, Evening Angels Gather Here. I may have said this already, but I grew up in the country. As an adult, living in a subdivision was convenient, but I wanted to have room. I want chickens and a garden and a porch swing. I want to sit outside and watch storm come in and just feel the air. So, now that we're here, this sign sort of spoke to me. It's sort of what I've been planning for. We really are so happy to have our land and our house. I know I have a lot to paint, but everything is nice, we just need to make it home. We really are thankful that nothing has to be done and we can focus on wants instead of needs.

Oh! I even hung a few pictures. I've been waiting to do that, not wanting to hang things until the walls were painted. (Did you see my cream and neon pig on the mantle?! I love that pig. I got it at an antique store last summer and it's become one of my favorite things- I carried it during the move, fearing that it might get broken. We get attached to the oddest things)

The picture below is Kaden's closet. Both of my boys are still small, so when I dress them, I dress them in 1 room, at the same time. In our last house, they both had large, walk-in closets. Kylan's closet had toys in it and Keden's closet had clothes in it. So, when we moved, we switched. We dress in Kylan's room and Keden's closet is the play closet. It had 2 oak (big suprise- more oak!) accordian doors. Is that what you call them? 2 doors that meet in the middle, each door is 2 pieces that V on the sides when you slide them apart? Well, they made me nervous, timy, curious fingers could easily get sqished in there! And, they really were'nt attractive. So, DW removed the doors. I had him cut some boards from shelves that we took out of Kylan's closet and make each oif the boys a desk, so they both have their own area and chair for when we play school or color or whatever they want to do. I should have waited to have him put those in because he just had to take them back out. I don't think that I mentioned that ALL of our closets are covered in cedar particle board. Over the sheetrock. Yes. I'm serious. We won't have moths, that's the good news... So, below, there's a picture of the before with the cedar and the doors (after DW put the desks in). (even our walk-in closets have this over the sheetrock) DW had to unscrew all of the shelving to remove it. Under it was bare sheetrock. The picture below this one was after one coat of primer on the wood shelving and trim. His room isn't painted yet, but while I was primering things, I just did the closet trim too. I'll be happy I did later. So, them I painted the walls with chalkboard paint and got them each a little light. The closet has a light too, but I thought they could use a little more. I have some of last years t-shirts hanging there at the momet. We're in limbo. I don't know if they'll fit this summer, so until I know, I don't want to box them up to get rid of. And Kaden will grow into Kylan's in a year, so that's always a rotating thing. That poor kid. I buy everything twice. Their clothes are the same, so Kaden will grow out of something just to grow into a bigger version of the same thing! 1 quart wasn't quite enough, so I ran out before I finished below Kylan's desk and I finally finished it tonight. I guess the bare sheetrock uses more paint. So, it finished now. I didn't do a new picture because I drew spiderman for Kylan on his side and he'd have a fit if I erased it (and it's not very cute!).

This is the living room wall by the entryway. The before picture shows one of the 20 paint samples that we tested. (The hall still has paint samples and is not painted yet). And, the light fixture is still the old one). But, the after pictures show the new color in the living room (it really is gray!) It is actually the same color as that sample in the 1st photo, I just took the after photos at night in yellowy light. We made the giant ruler. I saw the idea on Pinterest. The boys love it. This is them measuring Kaden's beloved blankie and Kylan's donkey. We are going to mark their heights and mark their old heights that we've been marking on a growth chart on every birthdays. I haven't decided how to do it yet without making it look crazy. It will probably be on the blank side.

So, that's a few of the things that I've been doing. I need to post pictures of DW's shop. It's new, so there isn't work being done to it, but he has been setting up his compressor and welder. And, He's got to make the Camaro comfortable there. :) I think I do have a picure of it, I'll add it last. He loves, loves, loves his shop. It's 40x50 I think, plenty of room for all of his man stuff. He gets the shop and I get the garage. :) And the carport. I just park right in the middle. He parks his truck in the driveway and never says a word about it! (probably so the boys won't ding his doors...)

OK, I found a few pictures of his shop. The ones in the dark are the night that he brought the Camaro home after we closed on the house. We were homless for 2 weeks between closings, so he had it parked at a friend's, so he was excited to bring it home. At the time, he only had half of the shop to park in because we gave the lady that we bought the house from 30 days to move her stuff in the shop. Now, we have the camper in half and the car has the other half all to itself. :) And the snow one, I think I was trying to sneak up on the deer, but the shop is in it! :) And I had room for another picture, so I added one that I already posted on Facebook, but it's Christmas night here, when it snowed.

Well, I'll keep you upadted! I hae 50 projects going at all times, so I have lots to share.
